How to use the calculator

Start With Verified Property Measurements

  1. Choose the calculation direction.
  2. Enter the real measurement, drawing measurement or known scale requested by that mode.
  3. Run the conversion and note the scale statement.
  4. Check one known dimension before relying on a printed or scanned plan.
FORMULA USED

At 1 inch = 20 feet, drawing length in inches = real length in feet ÷ 20. Real length = drawing length × 20.

A drawing scale connects paper measurements with real property dimensions. The stated scale is only reliable when the sheet is printed at the intended size; “fit to page” printing or image resizing can change the effective scale.

Calculation questions

Site Plan Scale Calculator FAQs

These answers explain the planning calculation. Verify local definitions before using the result in a permit package.

What scale is commonly used for a residential site plan?+

Common scales include 1 inch = 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 feet. The best scale depends on lot size, sheet size and required detail.

Why does my printed plan measure incorrectly?+

The PDF may have been printed using Fit, Shrink or another resizing option. Print at 100% or Actual Size and verify a known dimension.

Can I determine scale from one known measurement?+

Yes. Measure a line on the drawing and divide the known real length in feet by the drawing length in inches.

Is a scale calculation enough for permit submission?+

No. A permit-ready plan also needs accurate source measurements, labels, dimensions and the information required by the reviewing authority.
